Our Story: The Lookout RV Retreat

One chapter in a life shaped by wildfire, aviation, family, and a longtime connection to Garden Valley, Idaho, reflects the sense of community and adventure that eventually inspired The Lookout RV Retreat.

I began my journey fighting wildfires in 1976 on Oregon’s Mt. Hood National Forest. At that time, I had no idea that one summer job would shape so many aspects of my life — influencing where I would live, who I would marry, what our sons would eventually pursue, and, nearly fifty years later, even inspiring the creation of The Lookout RV Retreat in Garden Valley, Idaho.

After five seasons, firefighting took me to Garden Valley, Idaho, where I made history as the first woman on the Garden Valley Helitack crew. The following season, I ventured to California to join the newly forming Arrowhead Hotshot Crew, based in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks, where I met Joe.

Joe and I tied the knot in 1982 in Zig Zag, Oregon, a quaint community on Mt. Hood where my grandparents lived. We continued our work in fire for a couple of years before Joe served in the Army and became a helicopter pilot. After ten years filled with wonderful adventures and raising our two awesome sons, we returned to Garden Valley in 1994, putting down roots and raising our boys in this beautiful area.

Interestingly, both Grady and Casey followed us into the wildland fire world. After high school, they both started with Forest Service engine crews right here in Garden Valley. Eventually, Casey joined the Boise Hotshots, while Grady transitioned from an engine crew to the Garden Valley Helitack, working as a heli-rappeller before teaming up with his brother at Boise Hotshots. They spent several years there, and fire and helicopters truly became the family business.

Years later, this legacy took three-quarters of our family halfway around the globe. During the war in Afghanistan, Joe worked for Columbia Helicopters on a DOD contract for nine years, with both our sons eventually joining him to work in challenging conditions. Joe hired former Hotshots because they were already accustomed to extreme heat, dust, long days, and difficult conditions — and they knew how to keep going when the work got tough.

When the boys returned home, their paths shifted again. Casey started his own tree business in Boise, while Grady rejoined the Forest Service. In a remarkable twist of fate, Grady found himself back where my own Garden Valley story began. Today, he proudly serves as captain of the Garden Valley Helitack crew — bringing our family’s story full circle more than four decades after I became the crew’s first woman.

Meanwhile, I embarked on a different journey after settling back in Garden Valley in 1994. I spent seven years at Valley Real Estate before founding Garden Valley Properties, which I owned and operated for nearly twenty years. Along the way, I also launched Uncle Billy Bob’s Redneck Trailer Vacation Rentals. Eventually, I passed Garden Valley Properties on to the next generation and, about three years ago, retired Uncle Billy Bob’s nightly vacation rentals.

You might think managing two businesses would have been more than enough, but apparently not for me. At 70, I felt the urge for one more project. I revitalized the old Billy Bob RV sites, creating a space that honors nearly fifty years of our family’s history in Garden Valley, the great outdoors, wildland fire, and the Forest Service. And so, The Lookout RV Retreat was born.

The Lookout’s name, colors, materials, and vintage touches pay homage to the people, places, and wildland-fire experiences that have been woven throughout our family’s journey.

But The Lookout isn’t just about revisiting the past. It’s about creating a place where people can slow down, spend time outdoors, gather around a fire, explore the mountains, and make stories of their own. We aimed to design a retreat we would love to stay at — private, comfortable, a touch nostalgic, and distinctly reflective of Garden Valley.
